Abrasion: Dogs always feel comfortable clinging to their owner or something else. This can cause their fur to cross over each other, resulting in matting. Later, dirt can easily get stuck in this hair. Moreover, if dead hair remains in the union, it can cause various problems later on.

Season: One of the major factors responsible for matting is the season. Seasonal changes are responsible for many dogs’ matting, especially in winter when you don’t want to shed your dog’s long fur. Matting can then cause problems due to external humidity. If the loose fur is not removed, the dead skin will mix with the new fur and become a breeding ground for matted hair.

Allergies: If you browse the internet these days, you will see how dog allergies are increasing, especially among long-haired dogs who are more prone to allergies. Dogs lick the areas where they are allergic, which creates matted areas.

Fleas: When fleas and itching are present on your four-legged friend’s body, your friend will likely scratch the area uncontrollably. Then the dog will probably develop matted fur in the area due to friction.

Water: As we already know, water and humidity are enough to contribute to the formation of matting. Our pets often get their legs, chest, or stomach wet with water, causing matting.

Cleanliness: We love our beloved dogs like our own children, so we should take great care of them. We have to make sure that these pets do not play in any kind of dirt. They need a good bath, especially after playing on muddy ground.

How can we avoid matting?

Some dogs are relatively more prone to mats. Owners of short-haired dogs do not face this problem. This is a big problem for long-haired dog owners. But we will now tell you some solutions to this problem. Let us find out.

Regular Brushing: Regular brushing should be done very seriously in the case of matting problems. If this is not done regularly, we will not get rid of this problem easily. One mistake we make when brushing is combing the top layer instead of the bottom. This causes the undercoat to remain untidy and subsequently stick to the dog’s skin.

Brush in the right places: If your dog has certain areas where he doesn’t want you to brush, then you’ll realize there’s already matting there. Mats are especially likely to develop under the tail, under the chin, and on the chest.

Keeping a short coat: Dogs generally have three types of coats: 1. Top coat, 2. Undercoat, and 3. Double coat. Dogs with an undercoat and a topcoat are called double-coated. More specifically, a dog’s coat is the multi-colored fur or hair that covers its body. Just as humans have different hair patterns, dogs can also have different hair patterns. It is called a coat.

Your dog’s coat needs to be trimmed. This will reduce matting. However, we do not recommend it for double-coated dogs because their topcoat helps regulate heat, playing a role in protecting against various harmful aspects. The best way to deal with this problem in double-coated dogs is with an undercoat rake.

What to do if your dog’s coat is matted?

If you suspect your dog has matting, book a visit to the nearest grooming team as soon as possible. Do not cut the mats yourself with scissors because the mats are very close to the skin most of the time, risking skin cuts.

If you think matting is a trivial matter, then you’re under the wrong impression. Matting is one of the causes of skin irritation under the mat, which we cannot see and feel. Prolonged matting may also cause minor bleeding problems.

Overall, it’s better if you can master the brushing techniques. Otherwise, you need to book a regular groomer.
